Senior Accountant

Knelsen provides premier road, concrete, log haul, and precast construction products and services. We supply gravel, asphalt paving, ready-mix concrete, and offer reliable transportation services in trucking throughout Alberta, including Grande Prairie, Peace River, La Crete, High Level, and Edmonton.

The Senior Accountant supports the Financial Controller in ensuring the company’s financial information is accurate, timely, and reliable. This role is responsible for maintaining consistent accounting processes, supporting month-end close activities, and collaborating across departments to ensure financial results accurately reflect operational performance. 

Key Responsibilities 
Financial Reporting and Accounting 
  • Lead the month-end close process for assigned areas, ensuring timely completion and accurate reporting. 
  • Prepare and post recurring and non-routine journal entries, including accruals and adjustments, with appropriate documentation and analysis. 
  • Maintain balance sheet reconciliations and continuity schedules, ensuring accounts are complete, accurate, and reviewed on a regular basis. 
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial reporting and variance analysis for management. 
  • Prepare and maintain audit working papers and supporting documentation. 
  • Assist with the preparation of financial information for executive reporting. 

Process Improvement and Compliance 
  • Maintain and improve internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial systems. 
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, and financial controls. 
  • Coordinate with external auditors and assist with audit requirements. 

Cross-Functional Collaboration 
  • Work closely with operations and project teams to ensure financial results reflect operational activity. 
  • Coordinate financial close activities with internal stakeholders across departments. 
  • Support financial analysis and reporting that assists leadership with decision-making. 

Team Support 
  • Mentor and support the development of accounting staff. 
  • Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance team. 

Other Duties 
  • Perform additional finance-related responsibilities as required to support business operations. 

Qualifications and Experience 
  • Enrollment in the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) or later stages of the CPA designation program. 
  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related discipline. 
  • Experience in the construction, aggregates, or related industries is considered an asset. 
  • Strong proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is considered an asset. 
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with operations and project teams. 
  • Self-motivated with a proactive, solutions-oriented approach. 

Occupational Health and Safety 
  • Comply with all workplace policies and procedures related to risk identification, risk assessment, and risk control. 
  • Participate in activities supporting the company’s occupational health and safety program. 
  • Identify and report workplace hazards, incidents, injuries, or property damage. 
  • Participate in safety meetings as required. 

Work Conditions 
  • Office-based environment. 
  • Standard work schedule of approximately 40 hours per week; occasional additional hours may be required during peak reporting periods. 
  • Extended periods of sitting, computer use, and data analysis.
